# ChatGPT installation guide

> Install the Version Story plugin from ChatGPT's plugin directory and connect your Version Story account.

You will need:

- A Version Story account
- ChatGPT

Version Story is listed in ChatGPT's plugin directory. Installing it is two steps: add the
plugin, then authorize it to use your Version Story account. There is no connector URL to
enter and no network setting to change. ChatGPT hands the documents you attach to Version
Story directly.

## 1. Install the plugin

1. In ChatGPT, open **Plugins** in the sidebar.
2. Search for **Version Story** and open it, or go straight to the
   [plugin page](https://chatgpt.com/plugins/plugin_asdk_app_6ab400006af081919da14c4f6b0048c0).
   The listing is named **Version Story Redline Compare**, with the developer shown as Version Story.
3. Click **Install plugin**. A Version Story tab opens.

## 2. Connect your Version Story account

1. In the tab that opened, sign in to Version Story if you are not already signed in.
2. Click **Authorize**. The tab closes and you are returned to ChatGPT.
3. The plugin page now lists your account under **Connected accounts**, and the
   **Install plugin** button has become **Try in chat**.

Every comparison ChatGPT runs is saved to the projects of the account you connected.

## Test it

1. On the plugin page, click **Try in chat**. A new chat opens with Version Story selected.
   In any other chat, pick **Version Story Redline Compare** from the **Plugins** menu below the message box.
2. Attach two versions of a document.
3. Send:

   ```
   Compare these documents and give me a redline.
   ```

ChatGPT replies with a link to download the PDF redline and a link to the interactive
redline in Version Story. To get a Word document with tracked changes instead, ask for it by
name.

## What the plugin includes

The plugin connects ChatGPT to the same [MCP server](/developers/mcp/overview) the other
clients use, and adds four skills that tell ChatGPT when to use it:

| Skill | Use |
| --- | --- |
| `compare` | Compare document versions and create a PDF redline or a Word tracked-changes file |
| `merge` | Merge parallel revisions of the same original into one Word document with attributed tracked changes |
| `combine` | Combine independently written documents into one Word draft with attributed tracked changes |
| `version-history` | Trace changes through successive versions and attribute each surviving change to its source version |

## Disconnect or remove

On the plugin page, open the **More actions** menu and choose **Manage** to change the
connected account, or **Uninstall** to remove the plugin.
